NHW Home Positions What is it?

What can I do for Neighborhood Watch?

Here is a list of volunteer positions for our Neighborhood Watch Program.  As you can see, there is something for everyone!

Daytime PatrolThis patrol is vital because 90% of all burglaries take place during the day when few of our neighbors are at home.   You volunteer with a family member or friend (one drives and one observes).  We  can find you a partner if you need one.  You and your partner drive through the streets of our neighborhood, carefully watching for any unusual and potentially dangerous activities.  A thorough patrol of Parklawn/Barcroft Terrace usually takes 45-60 minutes.  Daytime patrols can be scheduled to fit your needs: you can patrol every week, every two weeks or once a month.

If you observe anything that you think needs police intervention, you use a cell phone to call the police.  Volunteers simply observe and report; all action is left to the police.

You can choose any day of the week and any time during the day to patrol.  We need both afternoon and morning patrols on weekdays.  Patrollers pass the magnetic Neighborhood Watch vehicle signs to the next day’s patrol at the end of their route.  Both day and night patrols are trained at an evening training session at the Mason District Police Station

Weekend Night PatrolFriday and Saturday night patrols help monitor our neighborhood for vandalism and evening criminal activity.  Patrols are only once every 10 weeks (4-5 times per year). A typical patrol takes from 45 minutes to one hour.  You can make your patrol at any convenient time in the evening, generally between 6-11 p.m.

Patrollers use their magnetic vehicle signs to show our presence in the neighborhood.  Patrollers observe and report anything suspicious to police.

Block CaptainA block captain distributes monthly schedules to the homes of Neighborhood Watch patrollers on his block.  There can be 3-15 schedules, depending on the percent of participation of neighbors in your block.  The schedules are put inside the screen door of the block captain by the Area coordinator.  Time to do this job: 5-15 minutes on a pleasant walk at a time of your choice.

Area CoordinatorAn area coordinator receives packets of monthly schedules and distributes the packets to Block Captains in his area.  There are usually 2-5 packets in an area.  Time to do this job:  10-30 minutes on a pleasant walk at a time of your choosing.  The schedules are delivered to your home by the Scheduler.
